Alphabetics by KayceOne and Toni Smoke

Alphabetics is the recent release of one of Scotland's best and most lyrically talented MCs in the scene just now, KayceOne. KayceOne has come a long way since he started as both a performer and as a battle rapper, he is not someone to sleep on. Alphabetics is a 16 track release for which Toni Smoke almost all the beats but mastered all the tracks. Toni Smoke is also the DJ for hip hop group ShadowPeople, members of ShadowPeople are Nity Gritz, KayceOne, Toni Smoke, R.S.T, Wee D and Soul. The singing on this LP was done by Becca Star. My favourite tracks on here are District 19, Mr Writer and FootPrints Remix. In FootPrints Remix he has used a good bouncy Drum N Bass track which works perfectly with both KayceOnes lyrics and Becca Starr's singing. I suspect many other Scottish MCs may start using Drum N Bass tracks aswell based on how well it worked for KayceOne. I look forward to the ShadowPeople album out this year, i also look forward to seeing KayceOne performing onstage and at battle events. He is one of the most exciting MCs that take to the stage and always gets the crowd going.

The Discernible Truth by Louie

The Discernible Truth EP is 16 track a release by the Deadlife MC Louie, Louie is also one half of Hector Bizerk where he has mixed hip hop with live drums, this combination got him nominated for the Best Hip Hop award by the Scottish Alternative Music Awards or SAMA in 2012. This EP is a great listen from one of Scotland’s best MCs. On this EP featuring with Louie was SolarEye and Michelle Low, Louie has worked with many prominent artists on the Scottish hip hop scene such as Wee D, Zayn and many more. he has also worked with Beatboxer Bigg Taj, he has also had his music played on radio more than once. Louie also supports big acts on stage, this year so far he has supported Sway, there is no doubt that he will support many more. The Beats on this EP where made by great producers such as David Ross, MacKenzie, Toni Smoke, Konchis, Scatabrainz and many more. My favourite tracks on here are Talking Heads of Agreement featuring Michelle Low and produced by Toni Smoke, another favourite is Typical Hip Hop which was produced by Typikal. Everyone should download this EP and it is well worth a listen from one of Scotland’s best MCs and battle rappers. and he always gets the crowd excited when he's on stage

And The Rest is History by Brian Jamieson

And The Rest Is History is a 15 track release by Scottish MC Brian Jamieson also known as BeeJay. BeeJay has opened for big acts such as Grandmaster Flash, 50 Cent, Mobb Deep, XZIBIT, Busta Rhymes and many more. This is a good release with each track having good lyrics, and a great beat. The beats for this LP were made by great beatmakers Big Div and Tank. BeeJay performed all the tracks himself without featuring with anyone else, additionally all scratches were done by DJ Zeeny. My favourite tracks are I Am Hip Hop; this track has an old school feel to it which makes it perfect with new style lyrics. Another favourite is TwentyFourSeven. This LP is well worth hearing and should be downloaded.

Breaking Point by Riddlah beat by Trauma

Breaking Point is the new release by Edinburgh based MC Riddlah UvBeatz, he used a beat from Trauma for this track, and as with all of his tracks this is a brilliant gritty tune that shows Riddlahs diversity as an MC and that he has more than one style of rocking a mic and can switch it up whever he needs to. I hope to see more different styles in his future work, but no matter what he does it is always assured that his tracks are well worth hearing.

Standup Recordz

Standup Recordz is Scotland’s fastest rising hip hop record label and clothing brand created by Steven Duncan, also known as DJ Scuba Steve. Steven also created the Scotland Standup page over 5 years ago. While with Scotland Standup he made 4 mixtapes. He called them the Scotland Standup Mixtape. On these Mixtapes were a large number of great MCs based in Scotland. Volume 2 and 4 are available at the links provided. The others can be found Google.
Starting the Standup Recordz label was something the Steven had wanted to do for a  long time. First to be signed to Standup Recordz was Zayn. Zayn had massive potential so he was chosen as the first artist to get it started. They originally wanted to promote artist that most people hadn’t heard of and help them get as much exposure to help them become better known. Ratson and Teknique were next to get signed. Nity Gritz had already been well known a few years due to his work with Edinburgh based MCF records.
Nity Gritz had also hosted mixtapes and such before, he showed a keen interest in what Steven was doing with the label and eventually joined Standup Recordz in 2011. Steven had been blogging for Certified Banger and been sent material from Split Prophets to review. Steven got in touch with them as soon as he could and got in touch with them for an interview. About a month after that the label was started and Split Prophets joined the crew.
Steven started the label to help promote artists that he personally enjoyed and get them as much exposure as possible. Currently there are 4 releases on bandcamp, links for all are provided at the bottom of the page, The Dazed and Diffused Mixtape by Zayn, The Birth by Bunty Beats and Zayn, Level Minded EP by Ratson and Lloydz and The Dollhouse Effect by Zayn and Yutani.
There will be a lot of releases this year from Standup Recordz, Nity Gritz is currently working on an album which will also be available soon, Zayn is working on a free download with a great Scottish Producer called David Ross, Teknique is also working on a project. A Standup Recordz video featuring Nity Gritz, Teknique, Split Prophets, Zayn and Ratson will be shot in May and also be released as a single.
One thing Steven doesn’t do as the owner of Standup Recordz is try to change his artists by getting them to sell out or change them into his own tool for financial gain, he runs Standup Recordz for the love of music, he also never Pushes an artist to do what he wants them to do instead of what they want. He offers advice and helps but never tries to control, many mainstream label owners could take a lesson from this as this makes all his artists respect more.
The Standup Recordz clothing range is used to fund promotional costs they need, Zayn and Split Prophets worked on their own designs and other Standup Recordz MCs will undoubtedly do the same. The Graff design T-shirt and hoody was drawn and designed by a great graff artist Cbas, Cbas is also the DJ for Sons Of Scotland and a highly respected beatmaker from Edinburgh.
Standup Recordz also have a promotional offer for artists that aren’t signed to the label, this promo offer includes a link to your personal artist profile on any site you wish, a post on the Standup Recordz and Scotland Standup blog, an email blast to 500+ industry contacts including Labels, Blogs and music websites, a mailout of a track of your choice to over 7000 radio contacts, 2 Facebook and Twitter campaigns reaching friends and worldwide groups and more.
Scottish hip hop has to be released to the masses as it already has a massive fanbase not just in Britain; but the International following is growing all the time. Scotland has some of the most talented MCs around just now and not all artists are getting the recognition they deserve.

Vagabonds After-Birth by Werd and Wardie Burns

Just like the first Vagabonds release, Vagabonds After-Birth wasn’t a planned release but more the tracks together that were left over. Even though it wasn’t planned this 20 track LP is still a great release from Werd and Wardie Burns, other artists also featuring on this LP are Deeko, Riddlah, Madhat McGore, Blasfima Sinna, Nity Gritz and Don V. As we have come to expect from great artists like Werd and Wardie all the tracks on here are high quality with great lyrics and good continuous flow and beats from some of the best Scottish producers including Cbas, Scant Squad, Riddlah UvBeatz, Toni Smoke, Zambian Astronaut and many more. My favourite tracks on this LP are Get Down On It, where they sampled Kasabian, Begun featuring Madhat McGore and Forever featuring Blasfima Sinna, Riddlah UvBeatz and Nity Gritz. This is one of the best LPs I have heard so far in 2012, this contains some of the best MCs in Scotland and definitely deserves a download.

Speech Syndicate by KevyBoii and Ill Az

The Speech Syndicate is a new 10 track release from KevyBoii and Ill Az. Both are part of the MC group Livi MCs. This is a very good listen as it combines KevyBoii’s aggressive lyrics and flow with Ill Az’s lyrics, All the tracks on here have been worked on hard by both people, not just on the lyrics but also on the beats as well. Each track is a little different but they all fit their style. My favourite tracks on this are Stand Up and Constant Debate; these two are both exciting rappers and have worked on a quite a few tracks together. They have also worked with other artists outside the LiviMCs such as Nity Gritz, Wee D, Gup and many more, and will most likely continue to work with other great artists, Livi MCs are also going to be doing a gig in Livingston, the first hip hop gig to be held there in over 2 decades. I can’t wait to see this gig and what these guys bring out next.

Nowadays EP by Conscious Route and Werd

The Nowadays EP is a collaboration from Werd S.O.S and Conscious Route C.C.F, it was released in 2011/2012. Also featured on this release are artists such as Jordan Butler, Deeko and Wardie Burns. All the Tracks were mastered by Jake Diaby from Red Planet Studio. Each track shows just how great Conscious Route and Werd are and how well they work together. My favourite tracks on here are Nowadays, Ah Swear featuring Edinburgh artist Jordan Butler and Understand featuring Wardie Burns. Both Werd and Conscious Route bring their own styles together in this collaboration and they have proved that they can bring a high quality EP out together, they proved it again with a collaboration EP with Blasfima Sinna titled Hear no See no Speak no Evil also brought out this year. I can’t wait to see who Conscious Route works with next as it will no doubt be great. People should download this and listen to it straight away.

7 by Swad and MacKenzie

7 is an EP released by Deadlife MCs Swad and MacKenzie, this is a good 7 track release, with all the beats made by MacKenzie himself. The Deadlife is one of the best known hip hop groups in Scotland; its members include Louie, GBH, Gupsie, Swad, MacKenzie, Erin Freil, Naomi Kerr, Tesko and DJ B Good. Swad and MacKenzie do most of the tracks themselves with the exception of track 7 titled Samurai. This track features Louie, Gupsie, Deva One, GBH and Wee D, that and Swad and MacKenzie makes 7 MCs on the 7th track on an EP called 7, this is a well thought of concept. All the tracks on the EP are very good and well worth hearing, but Samurai and Heaven stand out above the others. People should definitely download this EP and hear it for themselves.

David Ross mini bio

www.davidross.bandcamp.com                                                  www.soundcloud.com/davidrosshiphop

David Ross is a 17 year old Hip-Hop and Experimental producer from the small town of Lanark in the west coast of Scotland. Even though he is still at high school he has already worked with some of the best MCs in the Scottish hip hop scene, he has done his own remix of Werd and Deeko’s Mad World, he also made the beat for Whatever she Demands on Zayn’s Dazed and Diffused Mixtape, Whatever She Demands was played on radio 1. He had started making music at the age of 10 when upon hearing Eminem he developed a passion for writing poetry with his primary school level English skills. At the age of 12 he bought an MTV Music Generator for Xbox which enabled him to create his own instrumentals using loops that were part of the game, but it also allowed him to import samples, so he started getting into the ways of sampling as well as loops. At the age of 13 he then joined his cousins group "Ambiguous Tek" who then only consisted of 2 members his cousin and one of his best friends. It was something that he viewed as an amazing opportunity to work with his cousin on tracks, who had some of his poetry published in books. Over the next couple of years he was involved with the group but they never managed to release a single track. He was a member up until spring of 2011 when he decided with the group not actually going in any direction he had wanted to see them he thought it was best to leave and focus less on the group and more on working as an independent artist and beatmaker. He took the most recent instrumentals he had made for the group and created a project called the "No Phase EP" out of them. The idea behind the project was to do tracks with the various artists in Scotland and therefore try and connect himself with a scene that he belonged but had never got involved with for the 5-6 years he had been producing. He had only one hip-hop contact in the whole of Scotland who was Sound Thief, a friend of his cousin in the group "Ambiguous Tek". His cousin had received a cd featuring Scottish hip hop artists. This cd amazed him hearing Scottish MCs for the first time in your life is a strange feeling but it was one he never mocked. The first track he heard was Genetically Prone by Loki, and still to this day it is one of his biggest drives is to work with Loki, for the reason being that he was the very first hip hop artist he heard from Scotland. Hopes of completing the "No Phase EP" slowly faded but he has released another EP entitled "The Fun Of It EP" which was a collection of tracks he had enjoyed making more than others. He has begun working on an EP with one of Scotland’s best up and coming MCs Zayn. David has given up on writing poetry and focused mainly on creating beats. This is one young beatmaker and producer to watch. David Ross has also made the beat for Louie's track Excuse My Fucking French which was part of The Discernable Truth EP.

UvBeatz Recordings 3 Medication Part 2 LP by Riddlah UvBeatz

Medication Volume 2 is a 19 track follow up LP from Medication Volume 1 release by Riddlah UvBeatz. This release features a lot of the best MCs in Scotland including Werd, Madhat McGore, Cal, Deeko, Blasfima Sinna, Bright Sparks, Jee4ce, Silvertongue, Big Taj and many more.  Just like The Medication Volume 1 this follows the same theme of medicine throughout. Each track is different and that makes this LP even better than the one that came before. All the tracks are top quality and it was hard to choose but Exceed the Dose featuring Blasfima Sinna and Werd, Fear featuring G.L.A and Chad The Lad and The Effect with Jee4ce and Madhat McGore. As its come to be expected from someone like the Riddlah, who is as highly respected by everyone in the scene, as both a great rapper and beatmaker. All Scottish hip hop fans should have this downloaded, as well as many other releases from one of the best, well known and greatly respected MCs around. Riddlah frequently performs at gigs in Edinburgh and Glasgow and everyone should go and see him perform.

Undiscovered EP by Steve-E-T

The Undiscovered EP, released on the 10th of February 2012 is the work of up and coming MC Stephen Trainer or Steve-E-T. Steve-E-T is an exciting young MC to hear and is making his presence known in the underground hip hop scene. The EP itself has 8 Tracks on it and straight away from the first track all the way to then end shows just how hard he works. All of the tracks on this EP are great and it was hard to choose a favourite but I think Make a Change is the best one on there, its a deep track and very well done. Download this Mixtape and listen to it. This guy is only going to get better; I look forward to hearing what he does and who he does it with next.

The Rampant EP by Madhat McGore

The Rampant EP is the first release of 2012 by one of Edinburgh’s most recognised, hardest working and best MCs, MCFR signed Madhat McGore. In this 8 track EP he features with Zambian Astronaut, Lioness, Brinkworth and Regime, and used beats from great producers such as Dale A Thompson, Zambian Astronaut, UvBeatz, Loonatic Beats, Show N’ Prove and Scharkz. All the Tracks on this EP reflect his usual high quality work, but Braindead and Reaching Out featuring Regime are some of his best work to date. Having supported Devlin last year and performing at T in the Park, this year can only get for him as he has already supported Sway and is going to be supporting Benny Banks and undoubtedly many more big acts. We can expect Madhat McGore to become massive this year, if anyone deserves to be recognized as a mainstream artist it’s him. This EP is a must for Scottish Hip Hop fans and if you haven’t already got it, download it now. I can’t wait to see what he brings out next.

Quarantine 2 the Half Rhyme by Blasfima Sinna

Quarantine 2 the Half Rhyme Album was another solo release by Blasfima Sinna in 2011, this time he had left MCF records and gone solo. Just like in the first Quarantine most of the beats were his own, except for some excellent beats by great beatmakers. The beat for Guilty Pleasures is a Grimey/Dubstep beat made by S.O.S DJ and well known beatmaker Cbas and Nasty P made the Inner Focus and Just Keep beats. The tracks on her, just like the Tracks on Quarantine are different from his usual kind of beats, but this experimental hip hop works great. Favourite tracks on this are Guilty Pleasure and Linear Focuz, I think Linear Focuz is a great track with nice fitting lyrics and a perfect beat for this different style of track. I recommend people should hear this as it’s a great album. Also keep an eye out for Quarantine 3 the Quarter Rhyme out soon.

Werd S.O.S

Drew Devine (Werd) is an underground hip hop artist in Scotland, also the winner of the 2011 urban recording of the year for "A Declaration" which featured Wardie Burns, Zambian Astronaut and  Mog.

He has had his songs played on national UK radio and international hip-hop stations in Germany, Norway, France and US. He has featured on local stations like Glasgow University's Subcity Radio and Steg G's Sunny Govan Community Radio. He also was played on BBC radio 1Xtra and Scotland’s BBC radio 1. On the 26th June 2011 he appeared on BBC radio 1 introducing with Ally McCrae and Wardie Burns discussing and playing live tracks from the Oor Wardie album.

Werd's first release was Werd and Deeko Volume 1 in 2007, this release started their fanbase, but it wasn’t until Werd's solo release The Scottish Rapper Mixtape in 2008 that he gained a fanbase as a solo artist, with this release he caught the attention of the local promoters and artist which projected him to new heights in the underground music scene.

He had a busy year 2009 with all of his gigs, plus three releases, the Rap Re-Mixtape Volume 1, Patient Empowerment and Project Auld Reekie, All three are very good and all show how hard he works to bring such good quality in such little time, in 2009 his fanbase greatly grew with people outside Britain were also becoming fans.

2010 was an even busier year, his reputation had grown and he was performing frequent gigs and working with many different artists including a collaboration track with Australia’s Lee MC. He also had four releases in 2010, The Rap Re-Mixtape Volume 2, The Anti-Knife Crime EP with Wardie Burns and Riddlah UvBeatz, He featured on Underworld a Zambian Astronaut release and in December of 2010 he and Wardie Burns released the 26 track Vagabonds EP with features from Madhat, Riddlah, Mog, Zambian Astronaut, Nity Gritz and Phat Dave. He was also part of the 2010 Dunnedin Glen Festival.

It was in 2011 that he and Wardie released the Vagabonds in Space Mixtape which contained the track A Declaration featuring Zambian Astronaut and Mog, which won them the urban recording of the year award, also featured on vagabonds in space was Madhat McGore and Nostal. Also released in 2011 was Project Auld Reekie 2 and his double single John Connor and Drive it Like its Stolen, 2011 may have been his biggest year for gigs so far, as he supported some of the UKs biggest hip hop artists, he supported Dr Syntax in Edinburgh’s Studio 24, Stig of the Dump in the same venue and in December of 2011 he Supported Devlin onstage at the Liquid Rooms with Cbas as the DJ, Cbas is also the Sons Of Scotland DJ. Also supporting Devlin was Madhat McGore, Jimmy Snookz, Skipper, Villain, Shadowpeople (Nity Gritz and KayceOne, Dj by Toni Smoke).

2012 holds big things for Werd, Already with three releases this year, and having supported Sway onstage along with Madhat McGore, Jimmy Snookz, Skipper, Wardie Burns, Villain and Hector Bizerk. So far releases this year are Vagabonds Afterbirth with Wardie Burns, a Conscious Route collaboration titled Nowadays which featured other Scottish MCs such as Jordan Butler, Deeko and Wardie Burns. Also released this year was See no Hear no Speak no Evil collaboration with Conscious Route and Blasfima Sinna, He is also Planning to release his first solo Album this year. We can expect nothing but improvement from one of the hardest working and best MCs in Scotland; I personally think this will be a massive year for Werd.

Currently there have been over 20 S.O.S releases; all went through Werd with production, recording and artwork. Werd’s first solo album called Untitled Scot is due to be released this year. I’m expecting great things from Werd and can’t wait to see who he features with and supports in 2012 and I don’t think I’ll be disappointed.

The Dark Shadows EP by Logik

The Dark Shadows EP by Logik (Kyle burns) is a 7 track EP which was released at the start of 2012, on this EP he features with Snow, Dillz and Dee and used some atomic beats as well. All the tracks on the Mixtape are good, but Leaving is a good deep track, and The Background Role stands out as one of his best tracks to date. Logik is a hardworking, young MC who’s making his presence in the Scottish hip hop scene known, his hard work and focus is starting to pay off, he’s had an interview with the Motherwell times and one of his tracks has been played on Lanarkshire Cloud 9 Radio, this is just the start. He has featured with well-known artists in the Scottish hip hop scene such as Madhat McGore, Snow, Dee and more, he also is going to be working with great artists such as Tremz, London artist Boxer Noze and undoubtedly more very soon. Logik is a good artist and talented lyricist, he also has a great flow and a determination to be better, I think he will only improve and is one to keep an eye on in future. This is definitely a Mixtape to hear.

Dazed and Diffused by Zayn

Dazed and diffused is the recent Mixtape of Standup Recordz signed Zayn, also signed to Standup Recordz are MCs such as Ratson, Nity Gritz and more, the Dazed and Diffused Mixtape has features from well-known artist such as Nity Gritz, Louie, KayceOne and Ratson to name a few. That coupled with great beats from 17 year old David Ross, Oldeboy, Amaar Azaan and Young Gifted and Black, as well as instrumental samples make this a great Mixtape to hear. The tracks that stand out to me the most are Griptight; the beat was taken from a Nujabes instrumental, Whatever She Demands and Stencils featuring Nity Gritz. This is a good Mixtape and definitely worth hearing, I look forward to his next work.

Daniel

Quarantine by Blasfima Sinna

Quarantine was released in 2010 when Blasfima Sinna was still signed with Edinburgh based MCF records. The album itself it’s a solo release from Blasfima Sinna with no features from anyone else, with some very good beats make this well worth hearing. It’s a good EP with the great flow and lyrics that you expect from one of Scotland’s top MCs, all the tracks on it are good, but Meltdown, Fructose and Dusty Lamps stand out to me.  These tracks are different and experimental from his usual but they are still very good.

Daniel

Medici by Blasfima Sinna, produced by Nasty P

http://uturn.bandcamp.com/

Medici is an excellent listen from Blasfima Sinna and Nasty P. all track are good with a nice flow and lyrics, favourite tracks on here are Rat Race and Renaissance Rap. It combines good lyrics and flow from Blasfima Sinna, knowledge of Renaissance Italy and of course good beats from Nasty P. Nasty P has worked with and continues to work with many other prominent Scottish MCs such as Riddlah UvBeatz, Madhat McGore, Profisee and many more. He has also had one of his videos played on MTV. Medici is a well written EP and definately worth hearing, it wont disappoint, its cear how much hard work was put in by both Blasfima Sinna and Nasty P
